CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

"NICK, DID we send the paternity test results to Marius?"

He nodded, watching as I shovelled dirt into a wheelbarrow. This would be the last load I transferred to the spot across the road.

"Good. I want to keep him up to date. But no one else, okay?"

"Don't worry. I'm not telling Aiden anything. Not after he ignored me getting hurt."

I looked over at him. "Are you alright? I mean, you seemed fine, so I didn't ask."

"I think I should go to Helen's for a diagnostic."

The shovel slipped out of my hand. As I swooped down to pick it up and lay it across the top of the wheelbarrow, I looked at him.

"What are your symptoms, so she knows how serious it is?"

"My left hip seems to grind a bit. And my neck feels kinked."

Anger flared up inside me. The next time I saw David, he was going to learn what genuine pain was.

"Hello, Helen? This is Kara. Something's wrong with Nick. Do you have time today?"

"Of course, Sweetie. Bring him right over," she said, not even asking for symptoms.

Wheelbarrow forgotten, I hurried Nick to Helen's. She met us at the door, and as we walked into her basement workshop, Nick explained what happened and how. Helen cast me a sad look, as though I'd failed her.

True. I had.

"Can you fix him? I'll pay for everything," I said.

"Your life isn't the one I'd expected when I gave him to you." She had him on an elevated table and was pulling out a variety of tools I was only vaguely familiar with. "I'm not sure it's right for him to stay with you." Nick jumped to all fours, faced her, and hissed.

Startled, Helen jumped back. She recovered instantly, her hand whipping out and turning his power off. He sank to the table, eyes closed.

She looked at me again. This time, her look was a little more calculating. "He has strong opinions, I see."

"He's adopted a kitten, and we're transforming my living room into an indoor sanctuary for them. I can leave him at home, if you think that's better."

She barked out a laugh. "You're kidding, right? He's a tool. He's not alive. I'm just disappointed that your risks aren't more evenly measured."

"Trust me - David showing up was not part of any day I ever want to have. He got me transferred out of the Public Works department, and the mayor put me in marketing. Naturally, I quit."

"And this man tracked you down to threaten you?"

"No, it was coincidence. I've got another murder investigation going on - Curt Hutchings. David was helping a mourner find where he died and it just happened to be the empty lot next to Hipp Subs."

She looked at me, patiently waiting for the full story. She knew I'd won the sub shop, but the rest was new. It hurt, but I told her what happened with Aiden, too.

"No wonder Nick is so protective, sweetie." Helen reached out and put a hand on my arm. "I'll get him fixed up as fast as I can.
